Traffic & Parking Board Meeting

Meeting to discuss a recommendation to the City Manager to reduce the speed limit on Route 1 from 35mph to 25mph…

On Monday, July 23rd at 7:30 pm at City Hall, the City’s Traffic and Parking Board will meet to discuss a recommendation to the City Manager to reduce the speed limit on Route 1 from 35mph to 25mph. with the rationale as follows:

  • The average speeds on Route 1 are 30-31mph, which is already relatively low compared to other corridors and below the existing speed limit (which means we do not anticipate people changing routes to avoid this change as all other roadways are already 25mph and signals will be timed for progression with 25mph just as they are now for 35mph)
  • The roadway is already designed for a 25mph speed limit with narrower lanes, highlighted pedestrian crossing and medians
  • The southern portion of Route 1 is already 25mph, even at the southernmost point in the City where you enter the highway
  • Ridership on Metroway is increasing and more pedestrian activity is occurring along the corridor as Potomac Yard continues to develop
